"Mastering Snow Skills: A Hands-On Approach"

November 06, 2024

Skiing at alpine resorts and utilizing the ropeway is a fundamental experience for every skier. Mastering the use of ski equipment and navigating the ropeway smoothly—without interruption—is a vital skill for skiers.

Ropeways at ski resorts come in two main types: enclosed and open. Open ropeways include a traction mechanism where skiers use a small disc, often referred to as a T-bar, positioned between their legs. This disc is connected to a pulling rod and a cable that lifts skiers up the slope.

Beginner Level

At the beginner level, skiers learn to grab the pull rod from the starting point. This requires reaching out and timing the catch, which can often lead to missed attempts. Once the rod is secured, it is positioned under the legs, but maintaining balance can be challenging. Beginners often find themselves falling off the ropeway midway, as they adjust to the movement.

Intermediate Level

As skiers progress, they can retrieve the pull rod from various locations. After securing the rod, the first step is to clear any snow from the base before placing it under the leg or sometimes under the arm. At this stage, skiers gain confidence and can navigate ditches or icy patches with ease, maintaining an upright posture.

Advanced Intermediate Level

At this level, skiers experience a greater sense of freedom. With their hands unencumbered, they can adjust their gear, send messages, or even make phone calls while being dragged along. They can handle obstacles like ditches or ice by performing jumps or spins, showcasing their growing skills and comfort with the ropeway.

Advanced Level

Advanced skiers can detach their feet from the bindings, allowing them to navigate the ropeway with or without gear. They can adeptly handle any ice or debris on the trail, ensuring a smooth ride for themselves and others. Their movements are so fluid that they leave no trace behind, making it comfortable for skiers trailing behind them. Advanced skiers are also willing to assist others, demonstrating their mastery of the sport.

If you find yourself struggling with the ropeway at a ski resort, consider dedicating time to practice. Every skilled skier has faced challenges along the way, and behind the joy of skiing lies a commitment to persistence and improvement.
